What training do I need?

1) Do you drive for an organisation with a PSV Operators Licence?
A PSV operator licence (or O-licence) is a legal requirement in Great Britain for commercial businesses operating vehicles designed to carry 9 or more passengers for hire or reward with a view to profit. It ensures vehicles are maintained and operated legally, covering coaches, buses, and, in some cases, smaller vehicles.

All drivers for PSV Operator’s need to pass D1 driver training and complete CPC

2) Did you pass your car driving test before 1997?

Good news, you can drive minibuses with up to 16 passengers and be paid to do so

MiDAS - Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme or

MiDAS Accessible for wheelchair accessible minibuses.

Both recommended every 4 years

An annual online driver assessment is available to improve skills and reduce risk

3) Are you being paid to drive?

Training Recommendations

MiDAS - Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme is recommended every 4 years

You can drive 9-16 passenger vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. Up to 4.25 tonnes if they are electric or have specialist equipment or 5 tonnes if they are electric with specialist equipment

D1 Driver Training

You need D1 Driver Training if you are being paid to drive, or are driving a minibus over 3500kg (4250kg for electric vehicles). Rivervale offers one-to-one driving tuition to improve your chances of passing first time.

MiDAS and MiDAS Accessible

MiDAS is a nationally recognised scheme designed to refresh minibus drivers’ skills every four years. You can take MiDAS whether you have D1 entitlement or not.
